HAT5300-16T
Description
It’s an enterprise‑grade 3.5‑inch SATA HDD, 16 TB capacity, part of Synology’s HAT5300 series. Designed for NAS (Network Attached Storage) / storage server environments, especially Synology’s own systems. Firmware and hardware are tuned to work well with Synology’s DSM (DiskStation Manager) software. Synology designed it to work closely with its DSM (DiskStation Manager) software and its hardware to deliver good performance and durability
Key Features & Strengths
Here are the major selling points and what makes it stand out:
- Reliability / Endurance:
- Rated for ~2.5 million hours Mean Time To Failure (MTTF).
- Workload rating of 550 TB transferred per year, which means it’s designed for heavy usage.
- Persistent write cache technology to help reduce the risk of data loss or corruption in sudden power loss events.
- Performance:
- Rotational speed: 7,200 RPM.
- Sustained sequential read/write is around 262 MiB/s typ.
- Optimizations with Synology’s DSM that yield up to ~23% improvement in sequential reads under multi‑user or RAID situations vs non‑tuned drives.
- Validation & Support:
- Over 300,000 hours of in‑house stress testing by Synology on their NAS hardware.
- Comes with a 5‑year limited warranty.
- Automatic firmware updates through DSM when used in a Synology system
- Large cache / buffer: 512 MB (for the 16 TB version) to help smooth out bursts and improve performance.
-
Tight integration / optimization: The drive firmware is optimized for Synology DSM; in multi‑user / RAID / heavy sequential read scenarios, Synology claims up to ~23% better sustained sequential read performance compared to similar drives.
-
Warranty: Comes with a 5‑year limited warranty
Special Features / Optimizations
-
Persistent Write Cache Technology: helps reduce risk of data loss/corruption on sudden power loss.
-
Firmware tuned for DSM: the drive and Synology NAS/DiskStation software are optimized to get better sequential read performance in multi‑client or RAID settings; Synology claims up to ~23% improvement in certain sequential read workloads.
-
High validation / stress testing: Synology says over 300,000 hours (some sources say more) of in‑house tests to ensure reliability.
Pros & Trade‑Offs
Pros:
-
Very high capacity + performance for SATA drives; good for large storage arrays.
-
Enterprise reliability: high MTBF, high workload rating makes it suitable for 24/7 operations.
-
Optimized for Synology NAS; firmware integration helps with consistency, reliability, performance.
-
Long warranty (5 years) helps with total cost of ownership.
Trade‑Offs / Considerations:
-
Being an enterprise HDD, power consumption is higher than lower‑end/desktop HDDs. If you have many drives, cumulative power/heat could matter.
-
Mechanical drive: though it’s high RPM, it won’t match SSDs for random I/O or very low latency. Good for sequential workloads, but might lag in heavy mixed/random small file IOPS.
-
Noise, heat, physical space: typical of high performance 3.5‑inch enterprise HDDs.
Where It Fits Best / Use Cases
This drive is ideal when you need:
-
Large capacity storage in NAS or server for file storage, backups, media (video, images) etc.
-
Environments where many clients/accesses are happening concurrently — e.g. shared file servers, multi‑user video editing, large surveillance setups.
-
Reliability/durability are important: 24/7 uptime, minimized risk of data loss, running in RAID, etc.
-
You’re using Synology hardware and want full compatibility, firmware/DSM integration.
