Cisco GLC-SX-MMD Compatible 1000BASE-SX SFP Transceiver Module (MMF, 850nm, 550m, LC, Industrial, DOM)
GLC-SX-MMD is one of the most commonly used standard Cisco SFP modules. It is a hot-swappable input/output device plugged into a Gigabit Ethernet port. Cisco GLC-SX-MMD compatible SFP transceiver supports up to 550m link lengths over multi-mode fibre (MMF) using a wavelength of 850nm via an LC connector. Each SFP transceiver module is individually tested to be used on a series of Cisco switches, routers, servers, network interface card (NICs) etc. It is an improved version of the GLC-SX-MM, including Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM) to monitor the transceiver status. The GLC-SX-MMD operates over multimode fiber (MMF) and can reach distances up to 550 meters. GLC-SX-MMD provides a built-in DOM function that allows the network administrator to manage and diagnose the transceiver intelligently and efficient.
Key features
The Cisco GLC-SX-MMD SFP transceiver module offers several advantages, making it a popular choice for fiber optic networking. Here are the key benefits:
Compact Design
The mini-Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC) form factor allows for high port density in network devices, saving space and reducing clutter.
Cost-Effective
Providing a low-cost solution for fiber optic connections compared to using larger transceivers or dedicated fiber optic equipment.
Discover the Cisco GLC-SX-MMD
The Cisco GLC-SX-MMD Gigabit SFP Module for MMF/SMF Fiber is a versatile and highly reliable small form-factor pluggable (SFP) transceiver designed to deliver Gigabit Ethernet connectivity over fiber optic cables. It conforms to the 1000BASE‑SX standard (IEEE 802.3z) for short‑wavelength, short‑/medium‑distance multimode fiber (MMF) transmission. It supports Digital Optical Monitoring / DOM (also known as DDM) for diagnostics (e.g. temperature, transmit/receive optical power, voltage) so you can monitor real‑time operational status.
Flexible Fiber Connectivity
“Flexible fiber connectivity” in the context of the Cisco GLC‑SX‑MMD refers to its ability to adapt to different media (fiber types), support several deployment scenarios, and give network designers choices per port. The Cisco GLC-SX-MMD offers dual compatibility with multimode fiber (MMF) for distances up to 550 meters over standard MMF. Thus supports different distances depending on the quality and type of fiber. This capability provides maximum flexibility, allowing network administrators to deploy it in a wide range of scenarios, from intra-building networks to campus-wide links and metropolitan area networks.
High-Speed, Reliable Performance
Hot-Swappable for Minimal Downtime
Ease of Installation: Designed with Hot-swappable and plug-and-play, simplifying upgrades and maintenance. The Cisco GLC-SX-MMD SFP module can be inserted or removed without powering down the host switch, router, or network device. This feature allows for easier maintenance, upgrades, and expansions while keeping mission-critical systems continuously operational.

• Gigabit Ethernet
• 1x Fiber Channel
• Other optical links
The CISCO GLC-SX-MMD SFP provides an optical link budget of 21 dB, but the precise link span length depends on multiple factors such as fiber quality, number of splices, and connectors. When shorter distances of Single-Mode Fiber (SMF), CISCO GLC-SX-MMD, are used, it might be necessary to insert an inline optical attenuator in the link to avoid overloading the receiver. A 10-dB inline optical attenuator should be inserted between the fiber-optic cable plant and the receiving port on the SFP at each end of the link whenever the fiber-optic cable span loss is less than 8 dB.
